Minotaurus

Stephan Renault

In “Minotaurus,” Stephan Renault reimagines the ancient figure of the Minotaur, half-man, half-beast, a lost guardian of his own inner labyrinth. Frozen like an archaic bas-relief against a sky heavy with threats, the massive, angular body seems carved from rough, striated skin, concentrating in every rough edge the creature’s contained violence, where telluric forces and ancient wounds mingle.

Even in profile, the beast observes us, scrutinizing our gestures, motionless and silent. Faced with this presence, the viewer is confronted by an authority that inspires both fear and respect, as if the Minotaur’s self-assured power were keeping adversity at bay. Thus, the beast becomes an emblem of an inner strength that, in the face of chaos, without ever relinquishing its tragic dignity, faces the storm without flinching.
